Italy's flag carrier was founded in 1946 and operates from 2 Italian hubs: Leonardo da Vinci International Airport and Malpensa International Airport.

Alitalia is one of Europe's largest airlines, but it faces strong competition from low cost carriers which are growing both in terms of profit and number of airplanes owned.

Fleet

Alitalia has an aging fleet of 179 aircraft (as of June 2007).

The company is taking steps towards fleet modernization, but it'll take some time to replace the obsolete MD-82s and old Boeings.

Alitalia hasn't had any accidents since 1990 and despite its old fleet, it has quite good safety records.

Among the newest models of airplanes, the Italian flag carrier operates Airbus 319s and Airbus 320s.

Long haul flights are satisfied with Boeing 767s and 777s.
