General information
Aerolinee Italiani Internazionali is Alitalia's full name. Italy's flag carrier was founded in 1946 and operates from 2 Italian hubs: Leonardo da Vinci International Airport and Malpensa International Airport. Alitalia is one of Europe's largest airlines, but it faces strong competition from low cost carriers which are growing both in terms of profit and number of airplanes owned. Alitalia is owned by the Alitalia Group parent company, headquartered in Rome, Italy and is part of the World's biggest airline alliance, the SkyTeam Alliance.

Destinations
101 destinations are served by Alitalia, which is one of Europe's largest carriers. The airline flies primarily to European destinations, nearby Middle Easter and North African destinations but also serves faraway destinations like: Accra, Boston, Caracas, Chicago, Dubai, Lagos, New York, Shanghai, Toronto, Buenos Aires, Miami, Mumbai, New York City, Newark, Osaka, São Paulo, Tokyo.
Fleet
Alitalia has an aging fleet of 179 aircraft (as of June 2007). The company is taking steps towards fleet modernization, but it'll take some time to replace the obsolete MD-82s and old Boeings. Alitalia hasn't had any accidents since 1990 and despite its old fleet, it has quite good safety records. Among the newest models of airplanes, the Italian flag carrier operates Airbus 319s and Airbus 320s. Long haul flights are satisfied with Boeing 767s and 777s. There are also turboprop ATR-72s and Embraer ERJ-145s, Embraer ERJ-170s in the Alitalia fleet.
Frequent flyer program
MilleMiglia is Alitalia's frequent flyer program. Because the airline is part of the SkyTeam Alliance, one can use the Alitalia miles on other carriers
