General information

It is also one of the oldest airlines, being founded 1928 as Delta Air Service The company is based in Atlanta, Georgia, in the eastern United States. The Atlanta airport is the World's busiest. Delta has suffered a strong blow following the 2001 September 11 attacks, incomes have dropped and after a long period of financial difficulties, the airline was pushed to the brink of bankruptcy. Delta operates under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection since September 14, 2005.
Fact sheet
Destinations
Delta has a wide network of over 500 destinations. The airline serves more routes than any other carrier in the World. Their planes fly primarily to destinations within North America and Europe. They have important presence in Eastern Asia and Latin America, but weaker than other US carriers like NorthWest Airlines and American Airlines.
Fleet
Delta has an aging fleet with many old McDonnell Douglas airplanes still in service. It will take a long time to renew the fleet and the company will have to make major financial efforts. Major low cost carriers in the US, like JetBlue and SouthWest have a better capacity to renew their fleet, being in a better financial situation. Delta used to have 5 Boeing 747s in its fleet, which they bought in 1970. A few years after, the airline had to give up these aircraft due to low profitability (too large aircraft for too few passengers, not enough to cover expenses).
Frequent flyer program
Sky Miles is the name of Delta's frequent flyer program. If you are a member, flying often earns you miles, which after reaching a certain amount can get you important discounts on flights.
Activity & market position
Delta flies primarily to destinations in North America, Europe. In terms of passengers carried, Delta is considered the World's second largest airline, with over 119 million travelers transported in 2005. In terms of revenue, Delta Airlines is the 4th largest carrier in the World. Behind Air France-KLM, American Airlines and United Airlines. Delta has the most extended route network in the World. In 1999, Delta was a founding member of online travel service-trader company, Orbitz. In 2003, in order to face the competitive threat posed by low cost carriers, Delta has created a subsidiary low cost airline, called Song. The airline was a success as a brand, but went into a financial collapse and was "melted into" Delta just 3 years after, in 2006. Together with Aeroméxico, Air France-KLM, Alitalia, Continental Airlines, Aeroflot, NorthWest Airlines, etc. Delta is a memebr of the Sky Team strategic airline alliance.
