TAP Portugal - airline information
General information
TAP Portugal is the antional airline of Portugal. It serves destinations across Africa, Europe, the Americas. TAP was founded in 1945, flying initially between Lisbon and Madrid, eventually growing to become a major European airline. Today, TAP is part of the Star Alliance, along with Lufthansa, LOT - Polish Airlines, Air New Zealand, Thai Airways and others. Perhaps mainly due to the southwestern location of Portugal on the European continent, TAP isn't among the biggest players on the heart of the European market. Its routes are peripherical rather, it only connects Portugal to important European cities and serves routes important to the Portuguese (like flying to Brazil, for instance).

Destinations
As presented above, TAP serves destinations across Europe, Africa and the Americas. Included are the nearby islands, such as the Azores, São Tomé, Cape Verde, etc. Among the farthest destinations served are Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Caracas.
Fleet
In the 1970s TAP Portugal had Boeing 747s in its fleet, but later gave them up due to lack of demand (there weren't enough passengers on these large airplanes) and also because the aircraft have gotten old. Newly ordered Airbus A350s will enter the fleet in 2013.
