easyJet's evolution throughout the years

The Luton-based low cost airline, founded by Stelios Haji-Ioannou had its first take off in November 1995. Initially the offer consisted of flights on 2 routes: Luton-Glasgow and Luton-Edinburgh, served by 2 Boeing 737 aircraft.

Now, easyJet considers itself "Europe's leading low cost airline".
In 2002, it offered 89 routes, touching 36 European airports and had a fleet of 64 airplanes. easyJet merged with Go-fly, another low cost carrier, in August 2002.

In October 2002 , a deal about the acquisition of 120 Airbus jets was signed. The immense deal, worth billions of dollars shows how profitable the low cost airline business is. During the financial year of 2002, easyJet had pre-tax profits of 71,6 million British pounds and had carried 11,4 million passengers.

easyJet's shares were formally admitted to the London Stock Exchange at the price of 310 pence/ordinary share, on November 22, 2000.

Major shareholders are the founder himself, Stelios Haji-Ioannou and his family. He also controls separate easyGroup companies, such as easyInternetCafé, easyCar, easyMoney, easyValue. These firms operate independently from the airline, but their marketing is somehow related.

easyJet expects to grow larger in the future from all points of view (larger profit, more aircraft, more passengers, more destinations and who knows what else).

easyJet is confident in its actions, it predicts to become the largest European airline. We'll see that in the future. Currently it's Europe's most profitable low cost airline and has a larger fleet than its rival, the Irish Ryanair.
